Schloss Weitra is a former fortress founded by the Kuenringer. The present building is built on the foundations of the original stronghold and is rectangular in layout with a tall tower on its north side. The castle contains a rectangular courtyard in Renaissance style with three tiered arcading supported on granite columns. The arcades are decorated with lion’s heads, shells and stylized swords which symbolize Santiago de Compostela, since one of the former owners, Wolf Rumpf, was a knight of the order. Off the courtyard is the beautiful castle theatre which was remodelled in the Rococo style in the 19th century. Finally, no visit is complete without climbing the wonderful castle tower.
