The Villacher Alpenstraße runs for about sixteen kilometres from Villach up on to the foot of the Dobratsch massif at 1,732 metres. From the highest point of the route it is a two hour hike to the summit. The road repeatedly offers fantastic views over the city of Villach and the south side of the Dobratsch. Along the route there are many vantage points, rest areas and picnic sites, for example, the Alpengarten rest area has a display of over 900 species of alpine flowers set in an area of 10,000 m².
