The Jewish community in St Pölten is first mentioned in the 14th century but in 1638 the Jews were expelled from the city and were not allowed to return until the 19th century. It was not until 1911 that the community was able to buy land for a synagogue. The building was heavily damaged in the Kristallnacht on 9-10th November 1938 and fell out of use during the Second World War. After 1945 the synagogue deteriorated further but was rescued by the state in 1979 and reopened in 1984 as the Institute for the History of Austrian Jewry.
