Eduard van der Nüll, one of the designers of the ‘Staatsoper’, committed suicide following the public’s poor reception to the building. Completed in May 1869, and opened with Mozart’s "Don Giovanni”, the opera house was destroyed during a bombardment in World War II. The reconstruction was finished in 1955 and it is now one of the most revered opera houses in the world. Tickets for performances are in high demand and need to be booked well in advance but you can always join a regular daily tour of the building.
