This synagogue, built in 1826 and designed by Josef Kornhäusel, was the only one of twenty four to survive Kristallnacht. It suffered some damage in 1938 but has been beautifully restored and is a superb example of the discreet architecture of the period. Hidden away from the street, it boasts a stunning oval dome decorated in sky-blue and scattered with delicate stars. Twelve, yellow, Ionic columns support a two-tiered women’s gallery and on top of the splendid Baroque style, double-level, Holy Ark are the Tablets of the Law within a golden sunburst.
