This Roman Catholic monastery was founded in 1155 by monks from Regensburg, Germany, who were brought to Vienna by Henry II. The monastery contains a museum which is home to a number of exceptional works of art. The most impressive exhibit is the 15th century Schottenaltar; a winged altarpiece from the Schottenkirche. One side illustrates scenes from the life of the Virgin with the reverse, usually only on view at Easter, depicting the Passion. Most of the panels survive and the stunning colours make this a superb example of Gothic art and well worth closer examination.
