Schloss Hellbrun, situated in a beautiful park by the Salzach River, was the summer palace of Archbishop Markus Sitkus. It was designed by the Baroque architect Santino Solari. The palace’s ballroom contains paintings by Arsenio Mascagni. The main attraction of Hellbrun is the sophisticated water features, the Wasserspiele. The highlight of these is an outdoor dinner table with concealed water jets which could be activated during a meal. There is also a wonderful mechanical theatre with over a hundred water powered figures and a hydraulic organ. The gardens are full of grottoes and mythological sculptures, many by the sculpture Hans Waldburger.
