The Eisenuhrenmuseum celebrates Steyr’s association with the ancient craft of gold working and watch making since the origins date back to at least the 14th century. In fact the craftsman Friedrich der Goldschmied was first mentioned in 1350. Beginning in the 17th century, Steyr was a notable production centre for watches and clocks in the southern Germany, the most famous manufacturer being Johann Mayr. The house belonging to Friedrich Schmollgruber houses a museum dedicated to the craft of the clockmaker.
