The tall, slender, white column standing in Maria Theresien Strasse was erected in 1706 to commemorate the repelling of Bavarian troops on St. Anne’s Day three years earlier, during the war of the Spanish Succession. The Virgin Mary tops ‘Annasaüle’ with statues of St. Anne, St. George (the patron saint of the Tirol region) and other saints at the bottom. A great view of Innsbruck’s Altstadt (Old City), with the magnificent Nordkette mountain range in the background can be seen from here.
