The 9.8 kilometre long Schneebergbahn 1218 metres up into the high alpine region of Schneeberg from Puchberg am Schneeberg. The first section of the cog railway was opened on June 1st 1897 and the line was completed by the end of the following September. During the train’s leisurely ascent, travellers are treated to a marvellous variety of alpine scenery; rich meadows and pine forests are followed by breathtaking mountain panoramas. The journey ends at Austria’s highest train station. The railway operates six steam locomotives and a new diesel train, the Salamander.
