Mautern’s Römermuseum was originally housed in the former Margarethen Kapelle beside the parish church. The chapel itself is built on former Roman walls as Mautern, or Favianis as it was known, was a strategically important military camp from the 1st century onwards. The museum is now to be found in a Baroque building which was part of the castle. The exhibits, drawn from local excavations over the last eighty years, illustrate military and civilian life from the Bronze Age until the 5th century AD.
