The Pfarrkirche of Mautern an der Donau originates in the 11th century but now no traces of the Romanesque building are visible. Even the 15th century Gothic additions are more or less obscured by the Baroque improvements. Having said this the church’s interior is one of the most outstanding in Austria. The most important works of art are the fourteen representations of the Stations of the Cross by Martin Johann “Kremser” Schmidt which were painted in 1770. A pupil of Schmidt’s, Andreas Rudroff, created the find altarpiece “The Glory of St. |Stephan”. Interestingly, the grave of Kremser Schmidt’s father, Johann Schmidt, himself an important sculptor, can be found next to the entrance to the church.
