The Malteserschloss is Austria’s oldest base of the Knights of St. John having been founded in 1156. The present fortified castle with moat and defensive curtain was erected in 1595 by Komtur Karl von Tettauer and remodelled in the Barqoue style in 1752 for Komtur Anton Graf Collorede. The castle is surrounded by vineyards where the famous local grape variety, Grüner Veltliner, is grown organically. The exclusive wine from this estate is bottled in the winery of the Malteser Ritterorden in Mailberg.
