The unmissable Krimmler Wasserfälle are the largest and most spectacular in the entire Alps. Water from a hundred and ten square kilometre catchment area drops a total of 380 metres in three stages with the largest free drop being 65 metres. The peak output is in the order of 83 cubic metres per second and this occurs late in the afternoon during the spring thaw. Although the falls were already famous in the 18th century it wasn’t until the late 19th century that they became easily accessible to the general public. With the establishment of the Hohe Tauern National Park the Krimmler Waterfalls enjoys absolute protection from exploitation.
