This statue of the mythical ‘Lindwurm’, a large serpent-like dragon from European folklore, was created in the 16th century by Ulrich Vogelsang. The sculpture represents the local legend of a water dragon, believed responsible for floods, which was eventually enticed out of the swamps, near the river Glan, by a chained bull and slain by knights. The slayer depicted in the scene was added by Michael Hönel at a later date. The Lindwurm has become the city emblem and the city-arms still show the dragon to remind us of this heroic feat.
