Freistadt, which was the principal town of the lower Mühlviertel region on the salt route to Bohemia, is ringed with 4 kilometres of fortifications which are still largely intact. The spectacular 50 metre high keep, double walls, moats, towers and gates were completed in two phases, in about 1300 and 1400. Of special note is the Linzertor town gate, showing the Freistadt coat of arms, and the Böhmertor. Today the moat is planted with orchards and gardens.
