The Kongress und Theatrehaus, designed by the architect Hyazinth Michel, was opened originally in 1875 as a result of Bad Ischl’s increasing importance as a health resort. The elite of the worlds of art and science gathered here because of the presence of the Imperial summer residence and the building witnessed many fine balls and concerts. The house closed during the First World War but reopened in the 1920’s. During the Second World War the house served as a military hospital. Following a devastating fire in 1965, which left only the auditorium intact, the house was reconstructed in its original form.
