The elegantly simple city theatre with its saddle roof was built as a church for Capuchin monks in 1624. The building had a chequered history being used as a store place for guns and as Braunau’s slaughterhouse until 1835 when it became a theatre and home for Braunau’s theatre company. Between 1939 and 1946 the building became the state theatre but had to be closed because of dilapidation. After a major renovation, it was reopened in 1979 and has, ever since, been an important venue for theatre, concerts, exhibitions and other events.
