The Benedictine Abbey of Altenburg is one of the loveliest in the whole of Austria. It has a particular connection with the painter Paul Troger who lived and worked here. The Baroque abbey is built on the remains of a former Romaneque and Gothic establishment which was razed by the Swedes in 1645. The buildings are mostly the work of Prandtauer’s nephew, Josef Munggenast. The abbey complex is bursting with wonderful architecture, the highlight of which is the library with its marbled columns and frescos by Troger. The abbey church itself is uniquely rich in Baroque ornamentation, most outstanding of which is the cupola fresco by Troger.
