Wolkersdorf’s most well known landmark is its imposing castle. It was constructed about 1050 by a Bavrian aristocrat, Wolger, as a water castle. It is from the first owners name that the name of the town derives. In 1344 the building came into the hands of the Counts von Nürnberg and then to the Mark family of Brandenburg. The Hapsburgs took over in 1542 and used the castle as a hunting lodge. The castle was famously used as Napoleons headquarters after the battle of Deutsch Wagram on 7th July 1809. At present, the building is occupied by the town council.
