The castle Wolfstein is first mentioned in 1217. The identity of the first owners and builders is obscure but over the centuries it served as the seat of the local aristocrats and governors. In about 1620, the castle passed into the hands of the Abbey of Göttweig, by means of a gift from Maximilian II of Bavaria, after which it fell into decline. Despite this, the ruin is still impressive, an impression which is reinforced by its commending hilltop position. Next to the keep there is a Baroque chapel dedicated to St. Jacob the Elder, which is a place of pilgrimage, and the statue of the saint in the chapel dates from the 16th century.
