Although the earliest mention of Wolfpassing, as Wolfpeizingen, is at the beginning of the 12th century it is likely that it dates from the Carolingian period, some time in the 9th century. As the original name suggests, there may have been a bishops hunting lodge on the site of the present castle which itself dates from the 16th century and still has some well preserved Renaissance architectural features. Behind the castle, at Massingergasse 24, is the so-called Hirschenhaus, or Deer House, a 16th century hunting lodge.
