Wiener Neustadt’s castle and military academy dates originally from the 13th century. In the 15th century it was redeveloped as a residence for the Hapsburg Emperor Friedrich III and in the middle of the same century a Gothic hall church or chapel was added to the western side of the castle, dedicated to St. George. The church boasts some very fine glass painting. Emperor Maximillian I was born in the castle in 1479 and buried in the chapel in 1519. In 1752 the castle became a military academy only to be almost destroyed during the Second World War. Since then it has been completely rebuilt in its original style.
