Wels zoo, which is housed in and around the 16th century Herminenhof, is the oldest in Austria. Development was interrupted by the Second World War but by 1967 the zoo already housed 372 different animals. Now in the 28,000 square metre park visitors can see over 650 animals belonging to over 100 species. The modern zoo emphasises the importance of providing the animals with appropriate habitats and so, for example, the part of the river Mühlbach, which runs through the park, provides the water for numerous ponds and wetlands which are home to storks, heron, comorant, pelican, ducks, geese, beaver and alligators.
