The ruins of Burg Wartenfeld, situated at 1000 metres above sea level on a rocky outcrop with 50 to 100 metre vertical drops on three sides, are possibly in the most spectacular position of any in Austria, with views for miles over the surrounding countryside. The castle was started in the 13th century and the fortifications reflect its commanding position in that they are very lightly built on the cliff side flanks. Over the years it suffered decay until the 1980’s when work was carried out to save it. Nevertheless, sufficient remains of the castle to remind us what a formidable stronghold it must have been.
