The Waldrapp is a rare European species of ibis which was once very common in the Waldviertel. A representation of the bird can be seen in Waidhofen’s city book of 1383. Because stocks of the bird were declining, an association was formed, the Waldrapp Initiative Waidhofen an der Thaya, to save the Waldrapp from extinction. Thanks to the Association’s efforts, the creature is once again increasing in numbers. In the refuge visitors can see some of the beautiful birds and learn about their lives and habits. There is also an art gallery devoted to representations of the Waldrapp.
