The origin of this church derives from a knife-attack on Emperor Franz Joseph by Hungarian nationalist János Libényi in 1853. Following the failed regicide, the church was built on the spot as a Votivgabe (a thank-you present to God) for the rescue of the Emperor. Architecturally similar to Stephansdom, it is also made from white sandstone and has to be constantly renovated and protected from air-pollution and acid rain. Designed by Heinrich von Ferstel, in the neo-Gothic style of French cathedrals, it was opened in 1879 on the silver jubilee of the royal couple.
