As the 3rd official Headquarters of the United Nations, sharing functions with Geneva and New York, this area is known locally as UNO city. Designed by Austrian architect Johann Staber and built between 1973 and 1979, the 230,000 square metres consist of six Y-shaped office towers surrounding a cylindrical conference building, the highest tower standing 120 metres tall. Around 5,000 people work at the VIC and as well as catering, banking, postal and shopping facilities the UN organisation the International Atomic Energy Agency is based here amongst others.
