Although the University of Vienna was founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe, this building is strictly speaking the ‘Neue Universität’. Completed in 1884, and built in neo-Renaissance style by Heinrich Ferstel, the University now boasts over 60,000 students from over 100 countries and a broad spectrum of scientific research. Ferstel was inspired by the Palazzo Farnese in Rome for the creation of the courtyard which is occupied by the Kastalia Fountain, "Spring of Wisdom", created by Edmund Hellmer in 1910.
