The University Church was constructed more than seventy years after the founding of the Benedictine University, in 1623, by the distinguished Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The building, von Erlach’s most accomplished work and one of the most magnificent in Austria, was finally consecrated on November 20, 1707. Unluckily the architect was unable to witnesss the churches completion having lost his eyesight. Behind the church’s imposing façade is an austere, spacious interior under a generously proportioned cupola.
