Traismauer’s castle, and cultural centre, dominates the centre of the old town. The building dates back to Roman times and its courtyard has well preserved masonry from to the 4th and 5th centuries AD. A Roman inscription above the entrance of the castle is dedicated to Emperor Antonius Pius, who lived from 138 to 61 BC, and is therefore the earliest evidence of Traismauer’s importance to the Romans. The castle, which passed into the hands of the municipality in 1964, also has literary connections since it is mentioned in the Nibelungenlied as Krimhild’s resting place on her journey to King Etzel.
