The Belvedere consists of two stupendous baroque mansions designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt in the early 18th century. Built for the great Austrian military leader, Prince Eugène of Savoy, the Unteres Belvedere and Oberes Belvedere, facing each other across a formal garden, are now museums. The smaller, Lower Belvedere houses the Barockmuseum, with works by renowned Austrian artists of the 17th and 18th centuries, the splendidly decorated Marble Hall, the Goldkabinett and the Museum of Medieval Art. The Upper Belvedere displays works by Gustav Klimt, Van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Rodin, Richard Gerstl and Oskar Kokoschka amongst others.
