The 76cm gauge Steyrtalbahn is not only Austria but Europe’s oldest narrow gauge railway, having opened in 1889. The track runs 17.6 kilometres from the Steyr local station up to Grünburg and, although it closed for commercial use in the 1980’s, it still operates for tourists at weekends. At the Steyr end of the track there is a museum dedicated to the history of the line which includes a wooden model of a locomotive, a diorama and various rare historical items going back to the earliest years.
