Once the highest building in Europe (136.7m), ‘Stephansdom’ was built on the site of a 12th Century church and still incorporates elements such as the Giants Gate and the Towers of the Heathens. The famous tiled roofed, showing dazzling chevrons and an Austrian eagle, is its most striking feature. A Gothic stone pulpit by Anton Pilgram, Austria’s largest bell, the Pummerin, and the catacombs are just some of the things to view inside. A climb of 343 steps to the viewing platform of the skeletal south tower (Südturm) gives an impressive panorama of Vienna.
