Although reputed to be the oldest church site in Vienna, the Baroque Peterskirche that is seen today was completed in 1733. Gabriel Montani modelled the church on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and its stunning green dome and twin towers were completed by Hildebrandt. One of the many frescoes inside is ‘Coronation of Our Lady’ by Johann Michael Rottmayr but there are also other items by other well known artists of the period including the magnificent gilded pulpit by Matthias Steinl. Renovations, completed in 2004, have transformed the paintings in the church to their former glory.
