The Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter, which was once a Roman basilica, was founded in AD 696 by St. Rupert. Around its courtyards are ranged a number of buildings, the most important of which is St. Peter’s church which was built in the 12th century and subsequently rebuilt during the 17th and 18th centuries. The church contains the tomb of St. Rupert, fine Baroque paintings and a 17th century organ. Adjacent to the church is the cemetery, the origins of which can be traced back to the Roman city of Juvavum, whose mystical character inspired the Salzburg poet GeorgTrakl.
