Built in the 13th century this church displays five centuries of architectural styles. The Neoclassical façade was added in 1792 but as well as the Gothic interior there is an impressive Rococo ceiling above the high altar which is an alabaster rendered sculpture by Lorenzo Mattielli called ‘Fall of Angels’. The gilded pipe organ was once played by Joseph Haydn and Mozart’s Requiem was performed for the first time here at a memorial service for the composer in 1791. More than 4000 corpses were buried in the colossal crypt which spans the length and breadth of the building.
