As well as the architecturally creative headstones and monuments, and being the resting places of several 18th century artists and Antonio Diabelli the composer, the cemetery is world renowned as the burial place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The exact location of Mozart’s grave is no longer known but in 1859 sculptor Hanns Gasser erected a monument. This was later removed to the Central Cemetery on the 100th anniversary of Mozart’s death but was replaced in 1950 by Florian Josephu-Drouot with the Mozartgrab, featuring an angel and a broken column symbolising his untimely death.
