Wiener Neustadt’s St.-Georgs-Kathedrale can be found in the 13th century castle. During the 15th century the castle was redeveloped as a residence for the Hapsburg Emperor Friedrich III and in the middle of the same century a Gothic hall church or chapel was added to the western side of the castle, dedicated to St. George. The church boasts some very fine glass painting and a wall of coats of arms. Emperor Maximillian I was born in the castle in 1479 and buried in the cathedral in 1519. In 1752 the castle became a military academy only to be almost destroyed during the Second World War. Since then the cathedral and castle have been completely rebuilt in original style.
