Built in the 1330’s, the Augustinerkirche is one of the oldest parts of the Hofburg, although the Gothic interior, with vertical piers, ribbed vaults, and hanging chandeliers, is mostly from the 18th century. The neoclassical Christinendenkmal, an extravagant memorial to Maria Christina, was sculpted by Antonio Canova. A small chapel, Georgskapelle, contains the empty marble tomb of Emperor Leopold II and the Little Heart Crypt holds 54 silver urns storing the hearts of Habsburgs. Sunday High Mass is a fantastic event with a full choir, orchestra, and staggering acoustics; get there early to ensure you can sit!
