This very popular museum, housed in the Hofburg, enables visitors the opportunity to learn more about Elisabeth of Bavaria, affectionately named Sisi, wife of Emporer Franz Josef I. The six rooms, opened in 2004, explore the life and history of this much misunderstood but loved Empress. As well as beautiful portraits there are personal belongings on show such as her gowns, poems and jewellery. The last room in the sequence tells of her tragic death, assassinated in Geneva on September 10, 1898.
