The 131 metre long, 13 metre wide Siegmundstor tunnel is one of the most amazing feats of 18th civil century engineering. The tunnel, constructed between 1764 and 1766, connects the Old Town with the Riedenburg quarter through the Mönchsberg and is one of Salzburg’s most important arterial routes. The tunnel’s was opened by Sigismund von Schrattenbach by driving a six-horse carriage through it. The entrance to the tunnel is notable for its Baroque ornamentation by the brothers Johann and Wolfgang Hagenauer.
