The Hofmarstallschwemme, formerly a place for watering and washing horses, built Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and rebuilt by Prince Archbishop Firmian in 1732, stands next to the old city entrance to the Siegmundstor, a tunnel driven through the Mönchsberg. The centrepiece of the Hofmarstallschwemme is a status, named Der Rossebändiger, of a horse tamer by Michael Bernhard Mandl which is set against a backdrop of frescos by Josef Ebner which were installed during the 18th century remodelling.
