The Wallfahrtsbasilika Maria Plain, which has been a place of pilgrimage for 300 years, is situated on a hilltop with spectacular views over Salzburg reaching as far as the Alps. The building dates from the 17th century and houses a miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary over the high altar. Mozart wrote his Coronation Mass here in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Maria Plain in 1779. The piece may have been intended to be used for the crowning of the image of the Virgin in the church and was subsequently performed for the Prague coronation of Emperor Leopold II of Austria in August 1791.
