Vienna Secession was founded in 1897 by 19 artists including Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, and Max Kurzweil. This building, a key work of Viennese Art Nouveau, was completed in 1898 by Joseph Maria Olbrich as the headquarters for the movement and, nicknamed the ‘golden cabbage’, the dome of gilded bronze laurel leaves is its most striking feature. About 20 contemporary art exhibitions take place here each year accompanied by corresponding events, lectures, symposia and art discussions and permanently on display is Klimt’s ‘Beethoven Frieze’; a mural consisting of vast blank spaces framed by floating maidens.
