The Naturkundliche Sammlung Schneider contains several hundred restored specimens. The collection began with collection of owls but soon expanded to include other exotic animals including flamingo and bears. The founder of the museum, the pharmacist Gustav Schneider (1890-1945), was a passionate amateur zoologist and collected specimens from all over the world. The entire collection was donated to the city of Zwettl after the founder’s death and eventually found there way into the now permanent exhibition space in the city’s school tower. The collection has recently been restored and recatalogued.
