The internationally renowned Marionette Theatre was founded by sculptor Anton Aicher in 1913 and became known for the fairy tales staged for children. It is housed in a small Baroque theatre with an architecturally noteworthy auditorium. The repertoire of the theatre, or rather small opera house, is unusual in that nowadays it specialises in operas, operettas and ballet, mainly associated with Salzburg and especially Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart but also works by Rossini, Offenbach, Weber, Humperdinck and Johann Strauss. The theatre attracts world class stage directors and designers to work on the productions.
