The 17th century baroque cathedral of St. Rupert was founded in 774 on what was probably a sacred Celtic and Roman site and the location of the forum of the Roman city Juvavum. The building was reconstructed in its present form over a number of decades following a fire in 1598. The cathedral is renowned for its baroque façade with twin symmetrical towers, 71 metre high dome and the early 18th century pipe organ. The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised in St.Ruperts and later served as organist between 1779 and 1781. Many of his compositions from this period were first performed here.
