The ‘Russen Heldendenkmal’ monument, by sculptor Intizaryan and architect Yakovlev, was unveiled on May 8, 1949. A bronze figure of the Unknown Soldier, in a courageous stance, perches atop a column with a gilded shield and helmet, acting as controversial reminder that the advance of the Soviet troops saved one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. A red granite foundation quotes the names of the fallen Red Army troops, the so-called ‘liberators of Austria’ who entered the capital on April 13 1945, along with a quote from Stalin.
