The Rothschildschloss, or Schloss Waidhofen as it is sometimes known, stands near Waidhofen’s parish church. The building dates originally from the early 15th century but its present appearance is the result of two relatively recent modifications. In the 1880s the castle was bought by the Viennese Rothschild family who hired Friedrich von Schmidt, who also designed the Rathaus of Vienna, to remodel the castle in Gothic style. Much more recently, the architect Hans Hollein added some modernistic touches which some Austrians find inappropriate. The castle is used as a major exhibition centre.
